City Receives $500,000 County Grant to Support Main Street Corridor Improvement Project

EVANSTON, IL - The City of Evanston has received a $500,000 grant from the Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways to support major pedestrian, streetscape and infrastructure improvements along Main Street, from Maple to Hinman Avenues.
Evanston is one of 30 municipalities across Cook County to receive funding as part of the $8.5 million “2020 Invest in Cook Program,” which supports improvements consistent with the County’s long-range transportation plan.
The Main Street Corridor Improvement Project will include the reconstruction of Main Street to improve the pedestrian environment, including sidewalks, ADA accommodations, and pedestrian access to transit, as well as new streetscaping elements, roadway, and water main improvements. The project is currently in the design phase, with water main improvements scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2021, and streetscape, roadwork, lighting and other improvements scheduled for 2022.

These improvements will support safe transportation for all users and strong economic growth for years to come.”
In addition to the Invest in Cook grant, the City is also pursuing grant funding from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District and the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) to support the project.
