Fight the flu this season by getting vaccinated
As flu season approaches, the City, in partnership with Walgreens, is hosting a vaccination event on Thurs., Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the James Park Field House. This event is open to Evanston residents only; advanced registration is required.
Why it's important: With COVID-19 still present, reducing flu illnesses will help conserve scarce medical resources and reduce hospitalizations.
Coronavirus update
Situation Report
Below, you’ll find the latest COVID-19 data from the City’s Health and Human Services Department. Visit the City’s interactive COVID-19 dashboard (view on mobile) for information and metrics updated daily.
You can also view IDPH Restore Illinois indicators for Region 10, which includes Evanston, as well as the criteria that could cause our region to become more restrictive.
Daily cases remain steady
Evanston’s seven-day moving average of confirmed daily cases increased slightly to 3.71 new cases per day over the last seven-day operational period, compared to 3.43 new cases per day for the week prior. There were four new COVID-19 cases reported today.
Evanston’s seven-day moving average of new cases per 100,000 residents is 38.11, and remains lower than the State (123.42), Cook County (98), and our neighbors, Skokie (60.61) and Chicago (84). The State’s goal is 50 or fewer cases per 100,000 residents.
To date, Evanston has had 1,028 confirmed COVID-19 cases. Seventy-two residents have died of illness or complications related to COVID-19.
Test positivity rate decreases, hospital admissions stable
The City’s seven-day moving average daily test positivity rate (the percentage of those tested who tested positive for COVID-19 over a seven-day period) decreased to 1.31 percent, compared to 1.65 percent for the previous seven days. The statewide seven-day test positivity rate stands at 3.8 percent.
Cumulative test positivity rates continue to decrease among all age and racial demographic groups:
COVID-19 hospital admissions continue to be stable.
City partners with IDPH to offer free COVID-19 testing
This week, the City partnered with IDPH to provide free COVID-19 testing at ETHS. More than 800 community members were tested over the three-day event.
As a reminder, residents can access free testing daily at the State's COVID-19 community-based testing sites, including the nearest Harwood Heights and Arlington Heights locations.
Mental health, addiction resources available
If you’re feeling scared, anxious or stressed, you’re not alone. The City’s COVID-19 Resources page provides a list of mental health and other resources available for residents during this difficult time.
North Shore Alano and Chicago Alcoholics Anonymous offer a number of daily, online meetings for those who feel they may have a drinking or drug use problem.
COVID Question: Are face masks with vents recommended?
No. The City and CDC do not recommend face coverings or masks with exhalation valves or vents. Face coverings with one-way vents allow air to be exhaled through a hole, which can result in expelled respiratory droplets that can transmit COVID-19 to others. See the CDC's "Considerations for Wearing Masks" page for more information.
