Appointment required using the City’s online reservation portal
EVANSTON, IL - The City of Evanston’s Community Development Department has opened a temporary building permit desk at the Robert Crown Community Center, Room A, located at 1801 Main St. Due to the pandemic, the City’s permit desk at the Morton Civic Center will remain closed.
Reservations are required for all over-the-counter permits using the City’s online reservation system. Residents and contractors must make an appointment to visit the temporary permit desk, which will process same day, over-the-counter permits, including:
- Electrical permits
- Gutter/siding permits
- Interior drain tile permits
- Plumbing permits
- Roof repair permits
- Tuckpointing permits
- Window replacement permits
A 15-minute time slot is required for each permit. Customers who need multiple permits must reserve one time slot per permit to ensure adequate time to complete the process. There is a maximum of four time slots per visit. Walk-ins will not be accepted.
To ensure the safety of visitors and staff, face coverings must be worn inside the building at all times. Visitors will be subject to a temperature screening upon arrival, and should maintain a physical distance of at least six feet from those outside their household. To limit the volume of people at the permit desk, it is advised that only one person come to the permit desk for each transaction.
Permits that require plan or preservation review will not be processed at the temporary permit desk, and must be submitted by emailing permitdesk@cityofevanston.org. This includes permits for homes that are located within a historical district or have landmark status. Residents can determine if they live in a historical district by visiting cityofevanston.org/aboutmyplace and entering their address.
Arrive prepared The City highly recommends that permit desk customers email completed applications to permitdesk@cityofevanston.org prior to their scheduled appointment. Those who do not email their completed permit applications ahead of time must bring a hard copy of their completed application with them to their appointment, including all required documents. Customers should note in their email the date and time of their in-person reservation at the permit desk. Incomplete paperwork will not be accepted, and customers will have to schedule another appointment.
Temporary permit desk hours are Monday and Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.; and Wednesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to noon. Hours are subject to change. Credit cards and checks are accepted; permits and receipts will not be printed on-site and will be emailed to customers once the permit has been processed to limit contact between customers and staff.
A visit to the permit desk is not required; all permit types can continue to be submitted online by emailing completed applications to permitdesk@cityofevanston.org.
