City of Evanston, Chicago to Begin Phase 1 of Howard Street Corridor Project Improvements the Week of July 6

The City of Evanston in coordination with the City of Chicago will begin Phase 1 of Howard Street Corridor Project improvements the week of July 6. This project includes roadway resurfacing and rehabilitation, the replacement of curbs and gutters as needed, the installation of new water main, sewer work and drainage structures, improving transit operations and pedestrian safety, and installing new streetscape and roadway lighting elements. New traffic signal installations will occur at Howard Street and Dodge Avenue/California Avenue and Howard Street and Custer Avenue/Damen Avenue intersections. The Howard Street Corridor Project is funded by federal and local funds.

Overall Project Schedule
The limits of the project are Howard Street and Target Access Drive/Sacramento Avenue to Howard Street and Callan Avenue/Winchester Avenue and the project will be completed in three stages:

Stage 1: Water main installation including roadway patching
Target Access Drive to Dodge Avenue and Asbury Avenue to Ridge Avenue
July 6, 2020 through October 15, 2020

Stage 2: Streetscape, sidewalk, bike lane, street lights and traffic signal improvements
April 2021 through September 2021

Stage 3: Roadway grinding, base repair, asphalt paving and pavement markings
September 2021 through October 2021

Stage 1 Schedule
Phase 1 construction will begin the week of July 6 on Howard Street from Target Access Drive to Dodge Avenue by shifting the traffic to the south side. During construction, one lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained on Howard Street and access to the businesses will be maintained at all times. The actual date when construction is planned will be noted on the temporary “NO PARKING” signs posted 48 hours prior to the start of the work. The construction activities will create some inconveniences for the abutting businesses and residents, but all attempts will be made to minimize these issues. No parking any time within the work area will be in effect on Howard Street for the duration of construction.
