City Reminds Community Members to Stay Home, Save Lives
EVANSTON, IL - With warmer temperatures expected today and in the weeks ahead, the City of Evanston is reminding residents to do their part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 by staying home.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), limiting face-to-face contact and practicing social distancing — maintaining a distance of at least six feet from others — is the best way to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
“COVID-19 doesn’t take a break on sunny days and neither should we,” said Mayor Stephen Hagerty. “People’s lives are depending on each of us staying home and doing our part.”
Governor J.B. Pritzker's statewide Stay at Home Order, in effect through April 30, requires all Illinoisans to stay at home except for essential activities, like purchasing groceries, receiving medical care, or taking their pet for a walk.
Keep a Healthy Distance
Residents who must leave home for essential business should practice strict social distancing, maintaining a distance of at least six feet from others, as recommended by the CDC. The City will be installing temporary signage at parks and along the lakefront reminding residents to “Keep a Healthy Distance” while performing essential activities or exercise.
Cloth Face Coverings
The CDC is advising the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of COVID-19 and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others. Cloth face coverings should be used in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain, such as at grocery stores and pharmacies.
Cloth face coverings should:
- Fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face
- Be secured with ties or ear loops
- Include multiple layers of fabric
- Allow for breathing without restriction
- Be able to be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape
Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams shared a video with easy steps to make a cloth face covering.
The cloth face coverings recommended are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators. Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders, as recommended by current CDC guidance.
