Evanston Police Advise Vehicle Owners to Secure Construction Tools in Parking Lots at Evanston Stores.
EVANSTON, IL - The Evanston Police Department has seen a rise in car burglaries targeting tools. These vehicle burglaries are taking place in the parking lots frequented by contractors and DIYers. The Evanston Police Department would like to remind patrons of these stores, especially construction workers to secure their vehicles prior to entering any home improvement store. Keep expensive tools out of sight. If your vehicle has a toolbox be sure it is locked at all times.
Preventing a burglary is easier than you might think. A significant portion of vehicle burglaries in Evanston involve vehicle owners leaving their vehicle unsecured, such as unlocked doors. The Evanston Police Department advises the community to follow the C.L.E.A.R. method of risk reduction.
- C - Call the Police if you observe suspicious activity.
- L - Lock your doors and windows.
- E - Encourage your neighbors to be vigilant.
- A - Avoid having valuables visible for potential burglars.
- R - Record the serial numbers of your tools and equipment.
These tips are good advice 365 days a year, regardless of your location, so make them part of your normal routine. If you see suspicious activity report it to the Evanston Police Department at 847-866-5000. If you are witnessing an in progress crime or emergency call 911.
