Beginner Swing & Salsa 

Thursdays, November 7 - December 12, Noon to 1 p.m.

Learn swing and Latin-style dancing and help integrate different parts of your brain, like coordination, rhythm, and strategy, all while having fun! Social partner dancing has a higher impact on cognitive functioning over exercise or mental tasks alone. No partner needed, we rotate! Five classes will take place between November 7 and December 12. Registration is required.

Levy Lecture Series: Interracial Relationships Between Black Woman and White Men

Tuesday, November 12, 1 p.m. Approximately 87% of marriages in the U.S. are between people of the same racial/ethnic backgrounds. Yet black women are the only group of women in America who cannot take for granted that if they seek marriage to a black man that there will be an ample supply of available men from which to choose. Cheryl Judice, PhD, will talk about her new book, Interracial Relationships Between Black Women and White Men, and what she’s observed through her research studying the intersections of race, class and gender. Dr. Judice is on the faculty of Northwestern’s School of Education and Social Policy. This event is sponsored by the Levy Senior Center Foundation.

Silk Scarf Painting with Texture and Pattern

Thursday, November 14, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Color on silk is always beautiful. Show off your style with hand painted scarves and impress your friends. We will cover several easy techniques to apply color to the scarf in a variety of textures and patterns. Please wear painting clothes, as paint does not come out of clothing. The fee includes materials, so just bring yourself. Instructor: Vivian Visser.

Fran Randall Concert

Friday, November 15, 1:30 p.m. Featuring Monika Miodragovic, piano and and Caroline Paulsen, cellist. This event is sponsored by the Levy Senior Center Foundation. Monika Miodragovic was born in Belgrade, Serbia, and in 2008, moved with her family to Chicago. She received her BA in piano performance and music theory at the University of Michigan, and is pursuing a performance diploma at the Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts. She performs solo and chamber repertoire and serves as a teaching artist at Columbia College. She has performed at Chicago Symphony Hall, Carnegie Hall, and Harris Theater. Caroline Paulsen, from Minneapolis, MN, is currently studying cello performance at Northwestern University, where she is also a member of the NU Symphony Orchestra and the Dover Quartet’s chamber music program. Caroline has been a recipient of several competitive scholarships, and has worked with well-known composers.

A Christmas Story at the Fireside Theater 

Wednesday, November 20, 8:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.

Ralphie wants only one thing for Christmas: An Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-shot Range Model Air Rifle. A Christmas Story, The Musical, is the hilarious account of Ralphie’s desperate quest to ensure that this most perfect of gifts ends up under his tree this Christmas. Based on the classic 1983 movie that has become a holiday tradition that millions wait for every year, it features a funny and heartfelt score by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul who wrote music for the hit movie La La Land. The fee includes transportation, lunch and admission. Lunch includes tomato bisque, fresh bread, beef and bird, gingerbread frozen custard pie, coffee and tea. The Dennis Newton scholarship is available for this trip.

Thanksgiving Floral Arrangements

Friday, November 22, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Do have family coming over this Thanksgiving? Do you want to brighten up your home? Join Eileen Weber, AAF of Lake Forest Flowers, as she leads you in creating a beautiful fresh holiday arrangement. In this workshop, you will learn basic principles and elements of floral design, flower care and handling, and best of all, take your design home! Fresh materials and a container are included in the workshop fee. Please bring a pair of gloves and pruning shears.
