7th Ward Newsletter: Getting Ready for the Ohio State Game

As you no doubt have heard by now, Northwestern will host Ohio State University at Ryan Field this Friday evening. In preparation, NU Athletics staff have convened several meetings (beginning in February) to plan for the unique challenges of this weeknight game. Those attending the meetings have included representatives from the City, Evanston Police and Fire, NU police, District 65, Northshore Hospital, Canal Shores, Central Street Business Association, and many more.

Game Day Timeline, Friday, October 18
Noon           Game-day parking rate starts on Poplar
1:30 p.m      St. A’s early dismissal
3:30 p.m.     Ryan Field parking lots open for tailgating
                    Canal Shores holes 1, 2, 3, 11, & 12 open for parking, tailgating
3:30 p.m.     Central Street: No parking east of Green Bay
3:35 p.m.     District 65 school dismissal
5:30 p.m.     Ryan Field gates open
7:30 p.m.     Kickoff

Temporary lights will be installed at the Ryan Field parking lots and at the Canal Shores areas being used for tailgating. These noisy, generator-powered lights will stay on for some time after the end of the game to help game attendees find their cars and head for home.

There will be increased police presence around Ryan Field and along Central Street as well as additional crossing guards stationed around all nearby schools.

Arrangements have been made for those who normally park at Ryan Field to relocate to several other locations.

Fans are being encouraged to use public transit. The CTA’s Purple line trains will expand to six cars from 4:30 p.m. to midnight, and trains will run every eight minutes from 9:30 p.m. to midnight.

There will be a large contingent of City and NU police around the stadium area and surrounding neighborhoods. But should there be a problem to report, please call EPD’s non-emergency number: 847-866-5000. Of course, if there is an emergency, call 911.

Pancake Breakfast, Saturday, November 2

American Legion Post 42 will conduct its 34th Annual Pancake Breakfast from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 2, at the Legion Hall, 1030 Central St.

Door admission is $9, and children ages six and under can eat for free. Tickets are also available online.

Proceeds go to charities serving both veterans and families-in-need in Evanston and beyond. More than $55,000 has been raised in recent years to provide food, clothing and toys to organizations such as Connections for the Homeless, Fisher House at Hines VA Hospital, the National Emergency Fund and Evanston Boy Scout Troop 3.
