EVANSTON, IL - Northwestern University is back in session next week. The beginning of school is a good time to familiarize yourself with safety tips. Even though these tips are aimed at the university community everyone can benefit from them.
Familiarize Yourself with the Neighborhood or Campus
When you are new to a neighborhood or campus take some time to familiarize with the area. Taking time to learn your way around and the best routes to your regular destinations will increase safety. Being familiar with campus includes Northwestern's Blue Light Telephones. More information on Blue Light Telephones is available here.
Remain Alert and Aware of Your Surroundings
Everyone should remain alert and aware. This simple precaution will go a long way to increasing your safety. The biggest obstacle to remaining alert and aware is being distracted by your electronic devices. Don't mindlessly become involved in your electronic devices and be cautious about using ear buds. Keep the senses of sight and sound free to observe your surroundings and remain alert.
Don't Walk Alone at Night
There is strength in numbers, even when the number is two. Walking alone at night increases the chances of being the victim of a crime. Whenever possible walk with at least one other person. If no one is available to walk with you consider the options of ride shares and public transportation.
Ride Shares
Utilizing a ride share app can be a safe way get around but you should still exercise some basic caution. Don't allow someone you don't know or trust arrange for your ride share. When you use a ride share verify the car and driver picking you up is the same one you confirmed on your app.
Use Caution on Public Transportation
The CTA and Pace are generally safe and economical options to get to your destination. Remaining alert and aware of your surroundings makes them even safer.
- Don't travel alone at night
- Don't get distracted by electronic devices
- Remain in lit areas with other commuters
- Don't flaunt your valuables such as cash, jewelry and electronics
- Don't sleep on public transportation
- Intoxication on public transportation can diminish safety
Avoid Intoxication that Comprises Your Safety
Intoxication by alcohol or drugs will compromise your decision making and situational awareness. Don't become so intoxicated that it is unsafe. If you believe that your decision making and control is diminished, think about the situation that you are in and leave situations that are unsafe.
