Statement from Evanston Mayor Stephen H. Hagerty on Planned ICE Enforcement in Chicago Area

EVANSTON, IL - With reports of planned Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) activities happening throughout the nation this weekend, I want to reiterate my message from a few weeks ago regarding the situation in Evanston.

The Evanston Police Department will not provide any assistance to ICE in any enforcement actions in Evanston. The Police Department will monitor the situation throughout the weekend.

The Evanston Police Department is unaware of any enforcement action planned here. However, ICE has in the past conducted enforcement activities in Evanston without our knowledge or cooperation. We expect no prior knowledge of any enforcement.

In the meantime, it is important for community members to know their rights, regardless of their immigration status, should they be approached by ICE in public or at home. The ACLU provides a helpful list of Immigrants’ Rights (en Español) for a variety of scenarios. In addition, more information and resources can be found below.

The City of Evanston has had a “Welcoming City” policy since 2008. I am proud of the action taken in 2016 by the Evanston City Council under the leadership of former Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl to strengthen this original policy into local law. The current City Council made additional amendments to the ordinance in 2017. Learn more about the ordinance and city resources.

Governor Pritzker recently signed a package of legislation enhancing protection for immigrant families in Illinois. Our State’s and City’s values and actions are aligned on this matter.

The City of Evanston welcomes diversity and believes all individuals living in or visiting our city should be treated fairly with respect and dignity. Evanston will not support any efforts contrary to these beliefs.

El Departamento de Policía de Evanston no proporcionará asistencia a ICE en ninguna acción de detención en Evanston. El Departamento de Policía vigilará la situación durante todo el fin de semana.

El Departamento de Policía de Evanston no tiene conocimiento de ninguna redada planeada aquí. Sin embargo, en el pasado, ICE ha realizado actividades de detención en Evanston sin nuestro conocimiento o cooperación. No esperamos ser notificados previo a alguna redada o detención.
