EVANSTON, IL - On April 9, 2019, at 5:30 p.m. an Evanston Police Traffic Officer was at Dempster St and Dodge Ave when he observed a gray Nissan traveling southbound on Dodge. The Nissan was in violation of window tinting laws. The officer stopped the vehicle.
The officer made contact with the driver, Carlos Gonzalez. The officer then confirmed the window tint was in violation of the law. The officer also detected an odor of cannabis coming from the vehicle.
Assist officers arrived on scene and the investigation continued. The six occupants were instructed to exit the vehicle and a search of the vehicle was conducted. The search led to the recovery of the following items.
- Bags and scales consistent with narcotics sales
- A loaded Taurus 380 handgun in a purse
- A loaded Taurus 9mm underneath the passenger seat
- 2.4 grams of Xanax in the purse with the 380 handgun
- A small amount of cannabis.
- Ammunition in the glove box.
All of the occupants were transported to the station for further investigation. During interviews Emily Correa, the owner of the purse with the Taurus 380, admitted to possession of the handgun. Correa also admitted to possessing the Xanax. Malik Jackson admitted to possessing the Taurus 9mm.
One of the occupants was issued a City Ordinance Citation for Possession of Cannabis. Two of the occupants received no charges or citations.
The vehicle was towed.
