Dear Friends,

A very warm greeting to everyone in our 2nd Ward community! Please join me for our next 2nd Ward meeting on Thursday, January 10, 7 p.m., at the J.E.H. Education Center, 1500 McDaniel Avenue.

Demitrous Cook Sworn In as Police Chief

On Wed., Jan. 2, Demitrous Cook was sworn in as Evanston police chief. Chief Cook previously served 26 years at the Evanston Police Department, including six years as deputy chief of police, before becoming chief of the Glenwood Police Department in 2010. Watch video of the swearing-in ceremony.

The Officer and Gentlemen Academy 3rd Annual Kickoff

The O&G Academy aims to "educate, inspire, and empower young men to reach their full potential." Come learn about the program and meet the young men of the O&G Academy on Saturday, January 26, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the J.E.H. Education Center, 1500 McDaniel Ave.

Calling All Digital Divas

Digital Youth Divas is offering an out-of-school STEM program free of cost to 5th-grade girls in Evanston. The program engages students in design-based engineering, computer science, and arts-based activities. Programming starts January 12, and continues every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon until mid-May at Family Focus, 2010 Dewey Ave.

Christmas Tree Pickup Through February 1

City crews will pick up Christmas trees through Fri., Feb. 1 on residents' regular trash and recycling collection day. Trees should be placed on the parkway, in between the street and the sidewalk, and all decorations should be removed. Please do not place trees in plastic bags.

City to Offer Expedited Building Plan Review Services

The City of Evanston’s Community Development Department now offers expedited services for those seeking an accelerated review of building plans and permits for construction projects.

The premium service provides applicants with plan review comments within five business days, reducing wait times and allowing those with condensed timelines the ability to move through the City’s plan review and permit processes more quickly. During peak construction season, the City’s development review process typically requires three to four weeks to complete.

Project types eligible for expedited review are:

  • Interior remodels (residential or commercial)
  • Residential kitchen, bathroom or basement remodels
  • Porch, deck or pergola installations
  • Detached garage or accessory structure installations
  • Patio, sidewalk, driveway or hardscape installations (on private property)

Recycle Holiday String Lighting through January 31

The City of Evanston's annual holiday light recycling program will be held through Thursday, January 31, 2019. This year's donations will be recycled in conjunction with the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) and Elgin Recycling.

All holiday string lighting and extension cords are accepted through this free program. Garlands, live greens, and wreaths will not be accepted.

Lights can be dropped off at the locations listed below. For information about facility closings over the holidays, please call 3-1-1.

Levy Senior Center, 300 Dodge Ave.
Daily: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Evanston Ecology Center, 2024 McCormick Blvd.
Monday through Friday: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday: 8 a.m. to noon

Evanston Public Library, 1703 Orrington Ave.
Monday through Thursday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Friday and Saturday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sunday: Noon to 6 p.m.
