Proposed Road Threatens Canal Shore Golf Course

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) has received a new request for a road to the privately-owned Keefe property in Wilmette. The previous request had been for a roadway through Isabella Woods in Evanston. This new request is for a road to the Keefe property from Maple Avenue in Wilmette and would pave over a significant portion of Canal Shores’ 10th hole. The width of the proposed easement is approximately the size of the Central Street bridge in Evanston. This would harm important ecological areas, reduce valuable green space, and unfairly convert public land for private use.  

Canal Shores is adamantly opposed to this proposed roadway. You can help protect this valuable community green space by contacting MWRD commissioners to voice your opposition to the road request. Contact information for the MWRD commissioners as well as additional background is available on the Canal Shores website canalshores.org/dontpave10/. In addition, the WIlmette Park District is holding a public meeting about the road request on October 10, 7:30 p.m. at the Wilmette Village Hall, 1200 Wilmette Avenue. The road request is expected to be on the MWRD meeting agenda on October 18, 10:30 a.m., 100 E. Erie, Chicago. (Date to be confirmed).

Early Voting Begins October 22 at the Lorraine H. Morton Civic Center

Early voting for the Gubernatorial Election will take place Monday, October 22 through Monday, November 5 at the Lorraine H. Morton Civic Center. Voting hours and more information can be found on the Evanston City Clerk's webpage.

If you're not already registered to vote, please do so. You can register to vote at all early voting sites and at your polling location on Election Day, Tuesday, November 6.

Mayor Hagerty invites community members to help guide the development of Evanston’s Affordable Housing Plan. Apply to serve on the City's Affordable Housing Plan Steering Committee by Wed., Oct. 17.

EPL Releases Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Assessment and Seeks Feedback

Community members are encouraged to read the results from an equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) study conducted this year by the Evanston Public Library (EPL), which is posted online at epl.org/equityreport and available in hard copy at all library locations.  Community members are also encouraged to offer comments/feedback through October 31 online: epl.org/essentials/board-of-trustees/edi-feedback/ or via paper comment form at all Library locations.

Divvy Discount Program Launches in Evanston!

Evanston is excited to announce the expansion of the Divvy for Everyone (D4E) program! Income- or age-eligible residents now qualify for discounted annual Divvy membership - only $5 for the entire first year – as part of the D4E program.

Hispanic Heritage Month ¡Fiesta! October 14

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Latinx businesses! The ¡Fiesta! celebration will take place Sun., Oct. 14, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Levy Center, and will include music, vendors, entertainment, a Selena contest, and more. Food will be available for purchase. This event is free and open to all. Registration is encouraged.
