Two Evanston Families Displaced After a Basement Fire In The Residence

1715 Payne

EVANSTON, ILLINOIS - At 8:42 p.m., Saturday, June 30, Evanston fire companies responded to 1715 Payne Street, for the report of a structure fire in a multiple family residence.

First companies arrived on the scene within three minutes of the dispatch, reporting heavy smoke coming from the chimney and multiple people standing outside the structure. After further investigation, Engine 21 crew noticed heavy fire behind a glass block basement window. The engine company utilized a transitional attack method by removing the window and applying water from the outside, keeping the fire in check, until crews could make entry into the basement and extinguish the remaining fire. Shift Chief Steve Perrino quickly upgraded the fire to the MABAS BOX Level, bringing in other communities to assist with the fire and station coverage.

There were no reported civilian or firefighter injuries, but the extent of damage to the structure displaced two families, who are being assisted by Red Cross. it appears the fire started in the basement, but still under investigation.
