Evanston Police Department's July 4th Traffic Initiative Leads to an Arrest for Armed Habitual Criminal

EVANSTON, IL - On June 28, 2018 at 12:25 a.m. an Evanston Traffic Sergeant was on patrol in the area of the 300 block of Sheridan R for the July 4th Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Traffic Initiative. The Sergeant observed a blue Suzuki Vitara speeding  north on Sheridan Road. The Sergeant stopped the vehicle.

The Sergeant then made contact with the driver, Malik Brewer. The Sergeant interviewed Brewer and during the interview Brewer admitted that he was in possession of handgun. A loaded Phoenix Arms 22 caliber handgun contained a Louis Vuitton bag was recovered from inside the vehicle.

Brewer was arrested for possession of the handgun. Brewer did not have a FOID card or Concealed Carry Permit. Due to Brewer's criminal history he was eligible to be charged with Armed Habitual Criminal. 

Brewer's arrest was the third gun arrest by the Evanston Police Department in four days.

1 felony count of Armed Habitual Criminal

1 speeding citation
