Chicago Man Charged with Unlawful Use of a Weapon by an Armed Habitual Criminal

EVANSTON, IL - On May 28, 2018 at approximately 8:30 p.m. Evanston Police were in the area of the 800 block of Hinman Ave. looking for the offending vehicle that fled from a traffic stop. 

Officers detected an odor of cannabis and investigated. They discovered the odor of cannabis was coming from a parked White Hyundai. Officers made contact with Elijah Murphy as he exited and walked away from the vehicle.

Murphy was detained and officers went to the vehicle to investigate the odor of cannabis. One of the officers observed a magazine to a handgun in the interior. Officers then retrieved the magazine and located a loaded Smith and Wesson 40 caliber handgun. Three grams of suspect cannabis was also recovered.

Murphy was arrested and transported to the station. He did not admit to possession the handgun. the suspect cannabis field tested positive. 

Murphy was charged with the handgun and cited for the cannabis.

1 Civil Law Citation for Possession of Cannabis

Bond and Court Information

Murphy's received a $50,000 D-bond with EHM but Murphy is in the custody of IDOC due to parole violation.

The next court is June 18/2018 at Skokie Courthouse.
