Evanston Police Charge Offender in 2001 Sexual Assault Case

EVANSTON, IL - On May 18, 2018, Evanston Police Juvenile Bureau charged an offender in a Criminal Sexual  Assault incident from 2001. Kenneth Lewis, a 56 year old resident of Arvada, Colorado, was charged with sexual assault against a minor stemming from an incident that took place at an Evanston Hotel in late July of 2001. 

The male victim was 13 years old and a resident of Tulsa, Oklahoma at the time of the incident. Lewis , who was a Catholic Priest at the time of the incident, was with the victim's family on a trip to Evanston.

The incident was reported to Tulsa PD in 2004. Tulsa PD investigated and notified Evanston PD of the 2001 incident. Lewis could not be charged as part of the initial investigation. 

In 2017, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office and Evanston Police Juvenile Bureau reopened the investigation. The investigation led to an arrest warrant for Lewis for the charge of Predatory Sexual Assault of a Child. The warrant was issued on December 27, 2017 by the Honorable Judge Hood.

Lewis was in the country of Ecuador when the warrant was issued. Lewis returned from Ecuador to the United States on May 09, 2018. Lewis was arrested on the warrant by US Customs Agents at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta (Georgia) International Airport upon his arrival back to the U.S.

Lewis was transported back to Illinois by the Cook County Sheriff's Police Fugitive Unit. Evanston Police took custody of Lewis from the Fugitive Unit on May 18, 2018. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office approved one felony count of Predatory Sexual Assault of a Child 720 ILCS 5/11-1.40.

Lewis appeared in bond court on May 19, 2018. The next court date is May 22, 2018 at the Cook County Courthouse (26th St.and California Ave.) in room 100 at 10:30 a.m.
