This month, as we honor the important contributions of African Americans in our nation, we are fortunate to call many legendary African Americans our neighbors. Please take time this month to learn about our Black History here in Evanston, including a visit to the Lorraine H. Morton Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave., to enjoy an exhibit by Shorefront Legacy Museum, located on the second floor. Specifically, our neighborhoods and our homes are overflowing with rich Black History reaching far beyond the 5th Ward. There are opportunities all month hosted by several organizations and institutions to learn more.
Please join me for our next 5th Ward meeting this Thurs., Feb. 15, 2018 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Morton Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave, in Room G300, located on the ground floor level.
This month we will learn more about a proposed development at 2125 Ashland Ave. and I along with staff will give details on economic development in our ward. We will also learn from our Northwestern student-residents and student housing property owners as well as residents on how we can work together to reach our goals.
We continue to move forward with the expansion of Beck Park. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months. Please continue participating in public meetings and letting me know how I can better serve each of you.
We continue to grow, welcoming new families and new businesses and programs and there are many opportunities ahead.
I hope to see you soon! Alderman Robin Rue Simmons

On February 3, 2018, Evanston Township High School celebrated
the 50th Anniversary of the 1968 State Basketball Championship. This celebration also honored the members all
of the teams that also were top contenders in State Sectionals, Playoffs, etc. The
players, family, classmates, and friends came from many parts of the country to
participate in this event.
A two-day open house was held at the home of Derek & Sara
Diggs in collaboration with Alderman Robin Rue Simmons and her mother Frieda
Lynn Morris to honor this momentous event. There
were a lot of laughs and rich stories swapped over discussions that made it
seem that the entire City enjoyed that journey to the Championship. The players were young
men, actually boys, who were just having a great time and by happenstance made history
by winning an event that has yet to be repeated.
