OFFENDER ARRESTED WITH HANDGUN  

On Sunday, November 26, 2017 at approximately 9:15 PM, officers responded to a call in the 200 block of Hartrey Avenue for a disturbance that involved two male subjects in a black Jeep.  An officer responding to the area observed a dark colored Jeep southbound on Dodge Avenue from Brummel Street that was occupied by two males.  The officer conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle in the 7500 block of North California Avenue in Chicago.  Upon approaching the vehicle the officer noticed an odor of cannabis coming from inside.  The driver, now identified as Dewayne Martinez-Roberts, admitted to having cannabis in his possession.  While conducting a search of Martinez-Roberts, the officer recovered a loaded Taurus 9mm handgun from his jacket pocket.  Officers also recovered approximately 2 grams of cannabis from Martinez-Roberts.  The front seat passenger, now identified as Kenneth C. Sandy, was asked to exit the vehicle and upon doing so fled southbound on foot.  Officers with the assistance of Chicago Police Officers were able to locate Sandy and take him into custody in the 2800 block of West Birchwood Avenue.  No other contraband was recovered.  It was later determined that Martinez-Roberts and Sandy were not involved in the original disturbance call.   

After being transported to the Evanston Police Department, Martinez-Roberts and Sandy were charged with the below offenses.  A photograph of the recovered firearm is attached to this release for legitimate media publications only.

Kenneth C. Sandy, 25 years old
