5th Ward National Night Out Aug. 1

The 5th Ward National Night Out will be held on Tues., Aug.1, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at a new location, Twiggs Park, located at Dodge Ave. at Simpson St. The evening will feature house music and family fun, Leon Rogers of WGCI, games, nature tours, face painting, and BBQ. 

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign, on the first Tuesday of August, that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live. 


Evanston Property Tax Workshops Aug. 2-3

Evanston Property Tax Workshops will be held on Wed., Aug. 2 at 6:30 p.m.,at Lorraine H. Morton Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave., in the Council Chambers and Thurs. Aug. 3 at 6:30 p.m. at Northwestern University's Norris Center, 1999 Campus Drive. Property tax appeal is deadline is Wed. Aug. 30. Bethel AME Church Community Day / Health Fair / Back-to-School Jam Aug. 12

Bethel AME Church, 1744 Darrow Ave., will host their 2017 Health Fair/ Community Day/ Back to School Jam on Sat., Aug.12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will include school supply giveaways, mobile care van, school physicals/immunizations or asthma testing, community forum talks, voter registration, and much more. 


Books For Just $1 Aug. 12-13

EPL Book Sale

On Aug. 12 and 13, the Evanston Public Library will hold a $1 Book Sale at the Main Library,1703 Orrington Ave. Browse the stacks of donated books to fill the gaps in your library or just find a good book to read on vacation. 

Each book will be only $1. A limited number of CDs and DVDs will be available, also for $1 each. Sale hours will be Sat., Aug. 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Sun., Aug. 13, from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the third floor book sale room.


5th Ward Community Mixer Aug. 20

Community Mixer


On Sun., Aug. 20, Lorraine H. Morton Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave., from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., join the 5th Ward Planning Committee for an afternoon of interactive and informational sessions intended to provide residents with actionable knowledge based on needs the community deemed important. The topics will include securing living wage employment, leadership/entrepreneurial skills, mental health services, financial literacy, first-time home ownership, and soft skills training. 

Presenters include Robin Rue Simmons, 5th Ward Alderman; Dr. Melissa Blount, Blount Psychology; Daisy Copeland, Youth Empowerment Group, Chicago Operations HOPE, Inc.; and Charles Hardwick, Howard Area Community Center's Employment Resource Center.
