Chicago Avenue / Sheridan Road Project Update

Construction on Chicago Avenue, from Grove Street to Sheridan Road, was completed in June 2017. With approval of the State budget, the contractor started mobilizing for the Phase 2 portion of the construction on Sheridan Road this week.

Phase 2: Sheridan Road – Chicago/Sheridan Intersection to Lincoln Avenue
Preliminary work for Phase 2 construction began this week in preparation of the major reconstruction of Sheridan Road. The contractor anticipates shifting traffic to the east side of Sheridan Road from the Chicago/Sheridan intersection to Lincoln Street on Wednesday, July 19, weather permitting. During construction, one lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained on Sheridan Road. Through traffic will be closed on the east/west side streets between Orrington Avenue and Sheridan Road at Emerson St., Library Pl., Garrett Pl., Haven St., Dartmouth Pl., and Colfax St. Local traffic only will be allowed on these blocks during construction until the new traffic lanes are opened on Sheridan Road. Once construction of the two lanes on the west side of Sheridan Road is complete, traffic will be switched onto the new lanes to accommodate road construction of the east side of Sheridan Road. The construction activities will create some inconveniences for the abutting residents, but workers will attempt to minimize these issues.

Background
The City of Evanston started the Chicago Avenue / Sheridan Road Corridor Project improvements in April 2017. This project includes roadway resurfacing/reconstruction, a new protected bike lane, replacement of curb and gutter, traffic signal modernization, installation of new water main, storm sewer and drainage structures, pavement markings and landscaping. The proposed Chicago Avenue/ Sheridan Road project will make Downtown Evanston and NU campus areas safer for bicyclists and pedestrians, while improving traffic flow and traffic safety. A project location map is included in the attached newsletter. The improvement work is part of the City’s continuous program to improve the roadway system throughout the community and is funded by federal and local funds.

Contractor
The contractor for this roadway project is Plote Construction, Inc., located at 1100 Brandt Dr., Hoffman Estates.
