EVANSTON POLICE ANNOUNCE SIGNIFICANT ARRESTS

The Evanston Police Department is sending this media release out in reference to three significant arrests on July 13, 2017.  The incidents are as described below:

The first incident occurred on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at approximately 1:42AM after an officer was flagged down by a citizen near Howard Street and Callan Avenue.  The citizen informed the officer that he just observed a male subject break out the window and remove items out of a taxi that was parked on Howard Street near Seeley Avenue.  The officer checked the vehicle and discovered the front passenger side window had been broken out.  The officer located a subject in the area that matched the description given by the citizen and further observed the subject to be carrying a tablet.  When the officer attempted to stop the subject, he fled on foot.  The officer was able to take the subject, now identified as Kenneth T. Hamner, into custody in the 2000 block of Birchwood Avenue, Chicago.  The owner of the taxi was located and positively identified the Samsung tablet as well as a watch that Hamner had in his possession as being stolen from inside the vehicle.  Hamner was transported to the Evanston Police Department and charged with one count of felony Burglary to Motor Vehicle.

The second incident occurred on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at approximately 4:22PM after officers were dispatched to the 2100 block of Dewey Avenue in reference a report of two individuals in a vehicle smoking cannabis.  As the officers approached the vehicle, the two occupants exited the vehicle and attempted to walk away.  The officers detected a strong odor of cannabis coming from the vehicle as they approached and they detained both subjects, now identified as Edward D. Carter (drivers seat) and James W. Johnson (passenger seat).  As the officers looked into the vehicle through the window, they observed in plain view a rolled cannabis cigar in the center console ashtray and further observed the handle and hammer of a handgun stuffed between the center console and passenger seat.  Both Carter and Johnson were taken into custody.  The officers recovered the handgun, a loaded H & R .22 caliber revolver.  A further check of the vehicle revealed a loaded Taurus .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun along with two extra magazines under the front drivers seat and a clear plastic baggie containing 3.3 grams of cannabis.  Both Carter and Johnson were transported to the Evanston Police Department and charged with the below offenses.

1ct. Possession of Handgun/Ammunition Without Valid Firearm Owner's Identifcation Card - Class A Misdemeanor

James W. Johnson, 27 years old

2046 Darrow, Evanston, IL

1ct. Armed Habitual Criminal - Class X Felony

1ct. Unlawful Use of Weapon/No Valid Firearm Owner's Identification Card - Class A Misdemeanor

1ct. Possession of Handgun/Ammunition Without Valid Firearm Owner's Identification Card - Class A Misdemeanor

 

The third incident occurred on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at approximately 8:18PM when officers were dispatched to a burglary in progress at a residence in the 1900 block of Jackson Avenue.  A 15 year old male resident heard the dog barking and upon checking located a male subject who he recognized from the neighborhood rummaging through one of the bedrooms.  When he confronted the subject, the subject fled the residence.  Responding officers located the subject, now identified as Creed McGee, in a yard across the street from the residence.  The point of entry was discovered to be through a rear window, but nothing was discovered missing from the residence. McGee was transported to the Evanston Police Department and subsequently charged with one count of residential burglary.
