Evanston seniors are as whip smart as ever when it comes to spelling. Twelve contestants participated in the 2017 Senior Spelling Bee on Sat., April 22, and everyone had a good time. There were seven rounds of words prepared, with each round a bit more difficult than the previous one. The winning word, shrievalty (from shrieve: sheriff; a municipality governed by a sheriff) was given in the sixth round.

Congratulations to winners Lewis Koppel (left), 1st place, and Gary Wisby (right), 2nd place. The two finalists — both from Evanston — will compete at the regional Senior Spelling Bee at the Levy Senior Center on Fri., June 16 at 1:30 p.m. Come and watch the drama!

Thank you to our guest judges:

City of Evanton Long-term Care Ombudsman Audrey Thompson, Chief Judge
