May Festival for Our Birds - May 7

Colorful birds

Come to the May Festival and learn how the City of Evanston and Natural Habitat Evanston are improving habitat for birds and how you can help in your own yard, or in our City parks. The event will feature interactive demonstrations and information on creating bird habitat, sustainable gardening with native plants, solutions to bird-window collisions, certifying all of Evanston as a community habitat for birds and pollinators, and more. There will be activities for kids, native seed giveaways, and a bird walk facilitated in Spanish and English.

The first 50 attendees are welcome to take home a wildlife-friendly tree or shrub.  First come, first served. Local schools and places of worship will receive hundreds of additional saplings, all donated by the National Wildlife Federation Trees for Wildlife® program.

The event will take place on Sunday, May 7 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Evanston Ecology Center, 2024 McCormick Blvd. After the festival, from 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m., there will be a wildflower walk in Perkins Woods, led by steward Libby Hill. Meet at the kiosk at Bennett Avenue and Grant Street.

Evanston Garden Fair at Independence Park - May 12 & 13

    Garden Fair

Plan to stop by Independence Park on Central Street for plants for your garden on Friday, May 12 and Saturday, May 13, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Evanston Garden Fair is sponsored by the Lincolnwood Garden Club of Evanston, with support from the City of Evanston. It will feature perennials from garden club members' gardens, annuals, hanging baskets, and beautiful containers. Master gardeners will be on hand to offer advice, and Random Acts of Flowers will be there to collect your unwanted vases. Proceeds from the fair are given back to the community as grants for local garden-related projects.

    Central Street/Metra Mural Project

Ta-da! This summer, a new mural is going to be painted on the Metra underpass at Central Street and Green Bay Road! The project is spearheaded by the Evanston Mural Arts Program (EMAP), a new public art initiative established by Art Encounter, a 39-year-old nonprofit art organization in Evanston. Project organizers and Evanston natives Dustin Harris and Lea Pinsky are working with the Central Street Business Association (CSBA) and the Evanston Art Center to direct the theme, choose the artist, and garner support for the project as a whole. The mural is partially funded by the Evanston Arts Council as well.

For artists interested in applying, a Request for Proposals will go out in mid-May through the Evanston Art Center and also will be promoted through other City channels. EMAP, the Art Center, and CSBA are enthusiastic about this mural project because it will enhance the attractiveness of Central Street, help define it as an art destination, and draw increased attention to the vibrant business district and surrounding neighborhoods.

You can follow EMAP and this project on Facebook. To learn more about program managers Dustin Harris and Lea Pinsky, please read this feature from Evanston Magazine or check out Mile of Murals, the mural program they manage in Rogers Park.

Sidewalks, Street Cleaning & Alley Maintenance

    Sidewalk

    • Sidewalk Replacement. Property owners can improve the safety and appearance of their neighborhood by participating in the City's 50/50 Sidewalk Replacement Program. Under this program, the City pays half the cost of replacing the eligible sidewalk, with the property owner paying the other half.

The deadline to sign up for the spring portion of the program is Friday, May 12. To register, call 3-1-1 (or call/text 847-448-4311).

    • Street Cleaning. Check the parking signs at the beginning and end of each block to find out the specific days and times that parking restrictions are in place for that block. If you would like a text message or email notification to remind you to move your car, sign up for this service online or call/text 847-448-4311. Notifications are sent one to two days prior to the actual street cleaning day.

Alley Grading. Each year, starting in the spring, Evanston’s more than 300 unpaved alleys are periodically graded by the City. This work is done to eliminate potholes and ruts caused by vehicles, weather, and other factors. You can check the 2017 Alley Maintenance Schedule to see when a particular alley is next scheduled to be graded or call 3-1-1.
