Aging Well Film Night and Conference May 3, 5

Aging Well Evanston

Celebrate Older Americans Month at the 19th annual Aging Well Film Night and Conference! The Aging Well Film Night will take place Wed., May 3, 7 p.m., at the Evanston Public Library. Come enjoy A New Color: The Art of Being Edythe Boone, a film that illuminates timely social issues and shows how the work of one resilient woman reverberates throughout a community to inspire a powerful message. No registration is required for the film night; space will be limited.

The Aging Well Conference will take place on Fri., May 5, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Levy Center. Enjoy a continental breakfast, a welcome address by Mayor Tisdahl, and two educational workshops on topics such as health and wellness, safety, nutrition, technology, legal issues, financial planning and the arts. Registration is required for the conference. Diabetic Shoe Clinic May 4

If you're a diabetic, you may be entitled to a pair of therapeutic shoes and three pairs of inserts a year through a Medicare-paid program. On Thursday, May 4 at 10 a.m., Step Lively Foot and Ankle Centers will discuss the program and the importance of wearing good shoes. Attendees can choose from a variety of shoe styles, widths, and sizes. Please bring the following:

  1. Medicare number
  2. Primary doctor's name and phone number
  3. Secondary insurance card (if you have one)

An Overview of Significant American Paintings May 9

On Tuesday, May 9 at 1 p.m., Dr. Roberta Gray Katz will discuss key American artworks and connect these vivid images to historical, political, social and economic forces of artists' times.

Dr. Roberta Gray Katz is an art historian who specializes in American art with a particular interest in the literary paintings of Thomas Cole. Dr. Katz is currently a lecturer in the School of Professional Studies at Northwestern University.

A representative from Evanston’s 311 Center and the Age Friendly Task Force will be on hand on Tuesday, May 16 from 10:30 a.m. to noon to chat, answer your questions, and submit requests for City services. Come say hello!


Ethical Dilemmas May 18

Join Sue and Scott Walton, members of the Ethical Humanist Circle, on Thursday, May 18 at 6 p.m. for a discussion on ethical dilemmas animated by current national fervor. Fran Randall Concert Series May 19

Daniel Souvigny, a 16-year-old award-winning pianist, will share his passion of ragtime, stride, and jazz piano on Friday, May 19 at 1:30 p.m. The concert is funded by the Levy Senior Center Foundation. Refreshments following the performance will be provided by Symphony of Evanston.


Senior Safety and Vaccine Clinic May 24

Division Chief Paul Polep from the Evanston Fire Department will be available on Wednesday, May 24 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Levy Center lobby to provide information regarding "File for L.I.F.E" and tips for safety at home. Starting at 2 p.m., Mariano's Pharmacy will present a free clinic for those 65 years and older to receive a new pneumonia vaccine. The vaccine is free with Medicare Part B, but please remember to bring your insurance cards.


Shopping Day with the Levy Center Bus on Tuesdays, June 6 through August 1

A pilot program hosted by the Levy Senior Center will feature a new route with an additional shopping day on Tuesdays beginning June 6 through August 1. The Levy Bus will transport shoppers to and from Evanston Plaza (Dempster/Dodge), which houses Valli Produce, Dollar Tree, restaurants and more. The bus route will begin at 11 a.m. and return at 1:30 p.m. to pick up shoppers. The Wednesday shopping day to Food 4 Less on Main Street and the Jewel-Osco on Howard Street will continue without interruption.
