2nd Ward Header

Greetings!

Dear Friends,

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the residents in the 2nd Ward for your continued support. It has been an amazing opportunity to serve as your alderman and I am looking forward to another term. I also want to congratulate all of the other local candidates who won their respective race, as I am looking forward to working with each of you and Council over the next four years. Also, I am looking forward to working with all of you and moving from campaign mode to creating coalitions that build a stronger community.

Finally, I would like to send a special thank you my wife Claudia and family. I would not be able to enjoy my passion to serve without your love and support.

I ask that you please spread the word in the community about this newsletter. You are invited to a meeting at Erie Evanston-Skokie Health Center, located at 1285 Hartrey Ave, about a proposed housing development in the 2nd Ward on Tuesday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m.

Housing Opportunities for Women (HOW) is proposing a 16-unit, 2-bedroom apartment building at 2215 Dempster Street with on-site services and amenities for residents. Staff from HOW and the City will provide information on the project and address questions, including those from the March 23 ward meeting and February 23 community meeting. HOW has applied for funding from the Illinois Housing Development Authority to build the project and, pending approval from IHDA, will apply for gap funding from the City of Evanston. The project will provide stable housing and on-site services for income qualified families with children; there are an estimated 400 children in Evanston schools who are homeless or unstably housed. This development addresses a City Council goal of supporting at-risk families.

Peaceable Cities Evanston's next program, "Making Peace: Stories of Healing," is scheduled for Tues., April 25, 7 p.m., at the Levy Center, 300 Dodge Ave, Linden Room. The program will look at how forgiveness can act as a force for peaceful change in ourselves and in our community, from some very personal perspectives.

Our speakers: An award winning writer, Jeanne Bishop, is the author of Change of Heart: Justice, Mercy and Making Peace with my Sister's Killer. She currently defends the indigent as an assistant public defender in the Office of the Cook County Public Defender. A survivor of an acid attack, Karli Butler is a public speaker on self-esteem, self-respect, and forgiveness. From Evanston, she is the social service provider at Curt's Cafe South, as well as a restorative justice facilitator.
