Next 7th Ward Meeting, Wednesday, March 8

Please join me for a 7th Ward meeting, Wed., March 8, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Evanston Art Center, 1717 Central St.

The agenda will include the following:

• City staff and engineering consultants will present plans for the multi-year Central Street Bridge Rehabilitation Project.
  
  
• Representatives from Northwestern will share an update on the renovation of Welsh-Ryan Arena, including an overview of the project, design features, and the construction timeline.
  
  
• Officer Will Arzuaga will provide a police report and a presentation about the home security survey service that the Evanston Police Department offers to residents.

Northwestern University is renovating Anderson Hall (2701 Ashland Ave.). As part of this project, the existing softball scoreboard will be moved from its current location on the east wall of the Welsh-Ryan Arena to just behind the center field fence at Sharon Drysdale Field. The height of the relocated scoreboard will be approximately five feet lower, but the angle of the location will change slightly. NU estimates that it will be in the temporary location until summer/fall of 2018.

Evanston Police Department Open House, January 30

Mayoral Candidate Forums Scheduled

As you likely have heard, we will be having a Primary Election on February 28 for the offices of Mayor and 5th Ward Alderman since there are five candidates for each of these two offices. If any candidate receives 51 percent of the vote, he/she will be deemed the winner of the office being sought. If no candidate receives 51 percent, there will be a run-off at the Consolidated General Election on April 4 between the top two vote-getters for each of the two offices.

The mayoral candidates will share their perspectives on local issues at these two early forums:

New Summer Camp Registration Process Begins February 4

Individuals registering their children for Evanston summer camps will no longer have to wait for lottery results to find out if their child is successfully enrolled, thanks to a new, simplified camp registration process. On Sat., Feb. 4, online registration and in-person registration at the Robert Crown Center will be open from 8 a.m. to noon for Evanston residents (zip codes 60201 and 60202 only).

Senior Citizen Property Tax Reduction Applications Due February 8

Evanston residents 65 years or older should have received 2016 Senior and Senior Freeze Property Tax renewal applications in the mail and must file them by Wed., Feb. 8, 2017 in order to receive the savings. Illinois law requires seniors to reapply annually. Local seniors are encouraged to call Evanston's Property Tax Assessment Review office at 847-448-8168 for help completing the forms.

Mini-classes for Evanston Kids in Dance, Singing and Theater

A group of Northwestern University students is offering several free half-day “Classes for Kittens” for Evanston children on February 11 and 18.  Choices include A Capella singing, theater, ballroom dancing, rhythmic drum, and dance and creative dance.  “Classes for Kittens” was first offered last year and attracted over 60 children.
