EVANSTON POLICE RECOVER TWO HANDGUNS IN SEPARATE INCIDENTS

Evanston police officers recovered two loaded handguns in separate incidents.  The first incident occurred on Monday, December 12, 2016 at approximately 7:54 PM, after detectives from the Neighborhood Enforcement Team monitored a Facebook Live post from a known Evanston gang member that showed him and four other known subjects driving around in a vehicle while flashing a handgun.  Detectives observed the individuals from the video in a vehicle parked in an alley in the 800 block of Clark Street.  As the detectives approached the vehicle, the driver stayed inside the car, but all of the other occupants fled.  Three of the occupants entered a restaurant in the 800 block of Clark Street.  One occupant, later identified as Stephen Adams did not enter the restaurant but continued to flee eastbound on foot.  One detective stayed on scene, while the second pursued Adams on foot to a parking lot in the 700 block of Clark Street where Adams was taken into custody after he fell and dropped a loaded Glock .40 caliber handgun.  Once back-up units arrived, the subjects inside the restaurant along with the driver were also taken into custody without further incident.  Adams was charged with the below charges.  The Illinois Department of Corrections also issued a parole violation warrant for Adams, due to him being on parole when this incident occurred.  James W. Johnson, who fled into the restaurant and is currently on parole, was charged with Unlawful Contact with Street Gang Members due to his parole status.  The three other adult males were released without charges.  Arrestee photographs of Adams and Johnson along with a photograph of the recovered firearm are attached to this release for legitimate media purposes only.

In the second incident, on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at approximately 1:40 AM, patrol officers observed a vehicle make a turn from westbound on Main Street to northbound on Fowler Avenue without using its turn signal.  The vehicle was stopped in the 2300 block of Bradley Place at which time the rear seat passenger, known to the officers as Terrell Wright, exited the vehicle and began to walk away while clutching the right side of his waistband.  Wright began to run from the officers during which time they were able to observe that he had a handgun in his waistband.  While in the 900 block of Pitner Avenue, Wright fell on the snow and attempted to throw the handgun.  Wright was taken into custody and a loaded Glock .40 caliber handgun was recovered.  A plastic baggie containing approximately 4.0 grams of Cannabis was located on Wright during processing.  The adult female driver of the vehicle and an adult male and female passenger were released without charges.  Wright was charged with the below offenses.  An arrestee photograph of Wright along with a photograph of the recovered firearm are attached to this release for legitimate media purposes only.
