City of Evanston Stumped in Search for Holiday Tree, Branches Out to Nearby Communities for Assistance
EVANSTON, ILLINOIS - The City of Evanston is seeking the
help of nearby communities to spruce up downtown Evanston’s Fountain Square this
holiday season.
Each year, the City seeks the donation
of an Evanston fir or spruce tree to be the centerpiece of the community’s Holiday
Tree Lighting event. After this year’s search failed to uproot a suitable tree, the
City is branching out its search to communities within a five-mile radius of
Fountain Square, including sections of Chicago, Kenilworth, Lincolnwood, Skokie, Wilmette
and Winnetka.
The City will make an appeal to residents of Evanston and nearby
communities at a press conference:
10:30 a.m., Tuesday,
November 15 Fountain Square, Davis St. and Sherman Ave. Evanston, IL
At the press conference, City officials
will outline the criteria used to select the tree, including a minimum height
of 20 feet, superior shape, a clear distance from power lines, ease of access to the tree for cutting and
removing, and ease of transport.
Those interested in donating a tree on
their property are encouraged to call/text 847-448-4311. Screening and
selection of trees will be completed by Wednesday, November 30, and cutting
will be scheduled free of charge shortly after the selection. The City
will also remove the stump and restore the site with grass seed.
This year's tree lighting ceremony
will take place on Friday, December 9 at 5:30 p.m. All are invited to attend
the free event.
