EVANSTON POLICE DETECTIVES CHARGE TWO JUVENILES IN SEPARATE INVESTIGATIONS

The first incident initially occurred on August 25, 2016 at approximately 9:00PM in the 1200 block of Fowler Avenue where a resident was approached by two subjects, one of which was armed with a handgun.  The subjects demanded and took victims black Mazda CX-9.  Later on August 26, 2016 at approximately 12:08AM another resident was approached by two subjects in the 1700 block of Washington Street, who also displayed a gun and stole her Acura at gunpoint.  Officers responding to the incident on Washington Street observed the Acura and Mazda from the earlier incident driving eastbound on Harvard Terrace from Barton Avenue.  Officers attempted to stop the vehicles, but they fled.  The Mazda crashed into a security gate in the 200 block of Custer Avenue and the occupant fled, leaving behind a .38 caliber handgun and a cellular telephone in the vehicle.  The Acura was later recovered unoccupied in the 1500 block of Jonquil Terrace.

Detectives assigned to the investigation were able to identify the owner of the recovered cellular phone that was left in the stolen Mazda as being a male, 16 year old juvenile resident of Chicago.  Subsequent investigation resulted in the juvenile being positively identified as being the offender in the vehicular hijacking that occurred on Fowler Avenue.  On October 20, 2016 at approximately 7:00PM, members of the Evanston Police tactical unit took the juvenile into custody in the 7600 block of north Bosworth Avenue with a loaded 9mm handgun and he was sent to the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center at that time for possession of the handgun.  On October 24, 2016, detectives proceeded to the Cook County Court House in Skokie, Illinois and took custody of the juvenile.  The juvenile was charged with 1 count of Felony Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking.  The juvenile was also charged with 1 count of Felony Criminal Damage to State Supported Property for kicking a hole in the wall of the interview room at the Evanston Police Department.  The juvenile was subsequently transported back to the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center in Chicago.

The second incident originally occurred on October 7, 2016, where a male Northwestern student was approached by three subjects near the corner of Sheridan Road and Noyes Street.  The subjects demanded the victims wallet and further demanded the victim accompany them to an ATM in order to make a withdrawal.  The suspects walked the victim to the ATM near the Noyes Street CTA station and made him withdraw $400.00.  It should be noted that there was a similar robbery previous to this incident where the subjects attempted to rob a Northwestern student on a northbound CTA train near Noyes Street, but they did not get any proceeds.

Detectives investigating the incident were able to learn that a male, 17 year old juvenile Chicago resident, who matched the description of one of the offenders had been taken into custody by the Chicago Police Department for similar robberies.  A subsequent investigation resulted in the juvenile being positively identified as being the offender in the robbery of the victim at Sheridan Road and Noyes Street.  On October 24, 2016, detectives proceeded to the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center where the juvenile was being held and charged him with 1 count of Felony Armed Robbery and 1 count of Felony Unlawful Restraint.

Detectives are continuing their investigations into the aforementioned incidents in order to identify additional offenders.  Due to their juvenile status, no further information can be given about the juveniles arrested in either investigation.
