The Second Baptist Church of Evanston will host its annual
community wide, Back to School Prayer Vigil. It will be held tonight, Friday, July 22 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Second
Baptist Church Community Garden on the corner of Church and Pitner Streets.
This year’s vigil will include a special litany written by
Evanston Township High School students and prayers for children,
parents/guardians, youth, teachers, administrators, college students and other
personnel. Also included in this year’s vigil will be the music ministry of
Second Baptist Church and a guest choir.
Community members are invited to attend “National Night Out”
(NNO) celebration events taking place throughout Evanston on Tuesday, August 2,
from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., to take a public stance against crime. See below for a
list of registered 2016 NNO locations and events:
- Evanston Public Library, 1703 Orrington Ave. - Science Technology Engineering Art and Math (STEAM) activities outside the Church Street entrance between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.
- 1500 Washington Neighbors, 1500 block of Washington St. - Block Party BBQ, 7 p.m.
- Brummel Park Neighborhood Watch, Custer Ave. and Howard St. - Neighborhood Walk, Meet at 6:30 p.m.
- Evanston Animal Shelter, 2310 Oakton St. - Enjoy snacks and games while meeting some of the Shelter's adoptable animals and alumni, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
- Church St. and Dodge Ave. - Neighborhood Meet and Greet, 7 p.m.
- Penny Park, Lake St. and Ashland Ave. - Movie in the Park, Inside Out, 7 p.m. (movie begins at dusk, approximately 8:15 p.m.)
- Cartwright Park, 3300 Noyes St. - Neighborhood Meet and Greet; food and drinks, 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- Hidden Park Neighborhood Watch, Dobson/Brummel Park, Ashland Ave. between Dobson and Brummel Streets - Neighborhood Meet and Greet, 7 p.m.
- Smith Park Neighborhood Watch, Smith Park, Ashland Ave. and Lyons St. - Block Party in the Park with popsicles and treats, 7 p.m.
Residents are also asked to turn on their front porch lights
that evening as a display of unity. Participants can find materials, such as
banners, balloons, and t-shirts, online at natw.org.
National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign, on
the first Tuesday of August, that promotes police-community partnerships and
neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to
live. Neighbors participate across thousands of communities from all 50
states, United States territories, Canadian cities, and military bases
worldwide.

Bethel A.M.E. Church will host a Health Fair and Community Day Back to School Jam on Saturday, August 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1744 Darrow Ave.
The Fair will include community and health forum talks, free blood pressure & BMI checks, free glucose check, free 15-minute massage, free school supplies, and more.
