Dear Friends,

I hope this newsletter finds you well. If you were unable to make it to this month's 2nd Ward meeting, below is a recap of what you missed.

ManUp! Men’s health initiative kicks off June 25

Sat., June 25, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Robert Crown Park, located at 1701 Main St. Registration fee is $5. The Evanston Health and Human Services Department is organizing its inaugural men’s heath initiative, ManUp!, a male-centered program with activities designed for men to have fun while getting necessary health screenings. Sponsors for this event include the Chessmen Club of the North Shore Inc. and the Office of Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin.

This event will help men better understand how to stay healthy, provide health screenings to assess their current health and will include a fun obstacle course. The first 250 registrants will receive a t-shirt. The registration fee is $5. In-person registration will also be accepted at the kick­off event June 25. However, due to the expected time limit and registration requirements, online registration is preferred.

OPAL'S Summer Celebration Community Picnic June 25

It's time to celebrate all that OPAL has accomplished this year! Join OPAL this Saturday, June 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mason Park, 1616 Florence Ave. for a community picnic. For information, visit www.opalevanston.com.

Northwestern University Community Picnic June 25

NU Picnic ice cream

Everyone is invited to celebrate our Evanston community with our friends at Northwestern University on Sat., June 25 from 3-6 p.m. at NU's Norris University Center, East Lawn,1999 Campus Drive.  The community picnic will feature free food from local restaurants Hecky's Barbeque and Andy's Custard. Bring your family and enjoy music, face painting, a bounce house, and more.


Pray 4 Peace July 2

Pray 4 Peace

The Pray 4 Peace committee of Faith Temple Church of God in Christ invites the entire Evanston community to join in an hour of solidarity against gun violence on Saturday, July 2, from 10 a.m. to noon. The plan is to create a line of people on Dodge Street from Simpson south to Howard Street to show support in our stand against gun violence.  For more information call 224-392-1974.


Fourth of July — much more than a parade

Fourth of July celebration activities are provided by the Evanston Fourth of July Association, (a non-profit organization of volunteers) with support from the City of Evanston and other organizations.

The Evanston Fourth of July Association has named Annie Rose as Grand Marshall of this year’s parade! The parade theme is "The Fourth Awakens".

Evanston City Code
Chairs and blankets only are permitted on the parkway on Central Street from the west side of Bent Park to Asbury Avenue each year no earlier than 6:00 a.m. on July 1 for the sole purpose of viewing the Fourth of July parade. No such chairs and blankets are permitted at any time on the sidewalks and on areas where the pavement extends to the curb. Such chairs and blankets shall not encumber, obstruct, or encroach on crosswalks or handicapped access to the sidewalk. All such chairs and blankets must be removed no later than 6 p.m. on the day of the parade. Click here for full code.


Pace and CTA Conducting North Shore Survey to Improve Service

Pace, in partnership with the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), has initiated the North Shore Coordination Plan. This study will include a review of existing Pace and CTA routes in the North Shore area, including portions of the City of Evanston, Village of Skokie, Village of Wilmette, Village of Lincolnwood, and City of Chicago. As part of the study, Pace and CTA are conducting a general public survey of residents, students, employees and visitors in the study area and we invite you to take our survey here (www.tinyurl.com/pacectanorth). Your input will help Pace/CTA improve service in the North Shore area. Survey deadline: July 1, 2016. For more information, please visit our project website.
