Vigil in Remembrance of the Orlando Tragedy Victims June 15

Second Baptist Church, located at 1717 Benson Ave., will hold a vigil on Wednesday, June 15 at 7 p.m, in remembrance of the Orlando tragedy's victims, their families and friends. All are welcome.


Evanston Sings Community Choir Concert June 17

Evanston Own It will host its second annual “Evanston Sings” community choir concert on Friday, June 17, 7 p.m., at the Evanston Township High School Auditorium, 1600 Dodge Ave. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at the door or at Ebony Barbershop or Church Street Barbershop.  All proceeds from the concert will be donated to the Evanston Summer Youth Program. 

The benefit concert will also honor the pioneers of Chicago's gospel radio, such as Dr. Clay Evans of the Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, Elder Eric Thomas of Greater Harvest Baptist Church, Dr. Lou Della Evans Reid of GMAC Mass Choir, Elder Mark Henton of Monument of Faith, and Rev. Jerome Chambers of First Church of Deliverance. 


Net Casters Annual Revival June 15-17

Net Casters Men's Ministry of Bethel A.M.E. will host a Pre-Father's Day Revival Wed., June 15 - through Fri., June 17, beginning at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be  Rev. Kenneth E. Cherry Sr., Pastor of Christ Temple MB Church. 


Rquest for Volunteers and Supplies for Evanston Freedom Schools Program

Rev. Reggie Blount and Rev. Virginia Lee of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary are heading an effort to establish a summer and after-school program in the Fifth Ward, using the model developed by the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools® program.

The six-week summer reading enrichment program seeks to build strong, literate, and empowered children while making learning fun. It has proven to curb summer learning loss and help close achievement gaps, according to the Children’s Defense Fund. This program is designed specifically for underserved elementary students going into the 4th, 5th or 6th grade in Evanston’s District 65.

The Freedom Schools® which will be held June 27- August 3 at Friendship Baptist Church located at 2201 Foster Street is in need of volunteers and donations. 

Volunteers 

Organizations or individuals to provide the following:

  • Breakfast for 50 children at 8 a.m.
  • Lunch for 10 staff members
  • Creative Artists (i.e. dancers, musicians, steppers, quilters, writers) who would be willing to teach groups of ten children from 1-3 p.m.

Donations

Level 2 butcher paper, chart paper, colored pencils, colored tissue paper,  crayons, glue, index cards, old magazines, markers, paper cups, paint and paintbrushes, pens and pencils, pipe cleaners, rulers, scissors, shoe boxes, stapler and staples, tape, writing and drawing paper, yarn or string.

The Interdenominational Missionary Union of Evanston and the North Shore 83rd Anniversary Celebration June 23

The Interdenominational Missionary Union of Evanston and the North Shore is celebrating their 83rd Anniversary on Thursday, June 23 at Second Baptist Church,1717 Benson Avenue, Evanston, IL with Rev. Dr. Michael Nabors, Senior Pastor. The evening theme is "Prepare for the Battle" with guest speaker Rev. Rosalind K. Shorter, Pastor of Bethel A.M.E. Church.


Bethany Baptist Church of Christ Picnic July 9

Rev. Martha R. Holmes and the Bethany Baptist Church of Christ will host their annual church picnic on Sat., July 9 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Leahy Park, Lincoln St. west of Ridge Ave.
