Evanston Aging Well Conference and Film Night May 5 & 6

Aging Well Conference 2015

The 18th annual Aging Well Conference will be held this Friday, May 6, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at The Merion, located at 1611 Chicago Ave. The free, half-day conference includes an array of educational workshops on topics covering health, wellness, care giving, technology, financial planning, nutrition and the arts for seniors and those who care for them. Admission is free, but registration is required. 

The Aging Well Film Night will be held Thursday, May 5, starting at 7 p.m., at the Evanston Public Library, 1703 Orrington Ave. The film is "Alive Inside." No registration is necessary; however, seating space will be limited.


Beginner and Intermediate Beading Class Begins May 10

Use various types of beads and techniques to make sophisticated accessories, such as earrings, bracelets and necklaces! In this beginner and intermediate level beading class, the instructor will provide detailed demonstrations and hands-on assistance. The program begins on Tuesday, May 10 and will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon through June 28. Free Metalsmithing Demonstration Class May 13

Join us for a demo class on metalsmithing from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, May 13! This class will begin in June; try it before you commit to the class. The instructor will have tools and explain how the class will work. You may even get to do a simple project. There's no charge for this demonstration, but registration is required by Monday, May 9. Preventing Falls Presentation May 19

Join us on Thursday, May 19 for a "Preventing Falls" program presented by Dr. Ola Bamgbose, MD/MPH Clinical Assistant Professor, UIC School of Public Health. The presentation will include a 15-minute video clip and 35-minute lecture, beginning at 1 p.m. A question and answer session will follow. This is a free program, but pre-registration is requested. “Preventing Falls” is sponsored by Sunshine Homecare Agency.


Pizza Party Day & Fran Randall Memorial Concert May 20

National Pizza Party Day: Noon
Did you know that every third Friday in May, millions of pizza lovers join together to celebrate National Pizza Party Day? In celebration of Older Americans Month, join us on Friday, May 20 at noon at the Levy Center for a pizza party before the Fran Randall Memorial Concert. The event is free, but you must register by Monday, May 16 for the Pizza Party. No pizza will be available for drop-ins.

Fran Randall Memorial Concert Series: 1:30 p.m.
Enjoy great live music on Friday, May 20, at 1:30 p.m., as part of the Fran Randall Memorial Concert Series! Eric Rutherford is a singer/songwriter from Detroit. He attends Columbia College Chicago as a music major and dedicates the majority of his time to writing and creating soulful music that can be felt by any dynamic. He has been singing and playing piano since age 9, and grew up playing in his father’s church. Jennifer McDunn, cellist, is working on her master’s degree at Roosevelt University. Jennifer was a scholarship winner sponsored by the Musicians Club of Women. 

Refreshments will be served after the concert. This concert series is underwritten by the Levy Senior Center Foundation.


Senior S-P-E-L-L-I-N-G Bee May 21

Senior Spelling Bee

Witness an exciting day of competitive, linguistic challenges! Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre, Levy Senior Center and the Evanston Public Library will host the State of Illinois Senior Citizen Local Spelling Bee Competition on Saturday, May 21, 1 p.m., in the Evanston Public Library Community Room. In 2015, two local seniors went on to the regional competition, and one finished third at the State Finals in Springfield. Please register for this event at the Levy Center or email seniorspellingbee@cityofevanston.org.

This year, the regional competition will be held at the Levy Center on Friday, June 17 at 1 p.m. Spectators are welcome.


Enjoy "Hazel" at the Drury Lane Theatre May 25

Know Your Body. Know Yourself. Live Better! May 26

Healthy People

Join Comfort Keepers of the North Shore on Thursday, May 26, at 1 p.m., for "Know Your Body. Know Yourself. Live Better!" The program brings together two medical professionals to discuss remaining healthy over time, how to be aware of the challenges and the techniques for maintaining a healthy mind and body, and how to prepare for the changes brought on by today’s complex world as we age.
