 Evanston community members are invited to honor the veterans of the Vietnam War during a joint event hosted by the Evanston Vet Center and Evanston Public Library on Saturday, April 16 beginning at 1 p.m. in the Library's Community Meeting Room.
The Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense and thousands of other organizations across the country are joining together in the U.S. Vietnam War Commemoration to honor Vietnam Veterans throughout 2016, to mark the 50th anniversary of the final withdrawal of U.S. troops from Vietnam.
“Our Nation’s Vietnam War Commemoration is a long-overdue opportunity for all Americans to recognize, honor, and thank our Vietnam Veterans and their families for their service and sacrifices during one of America’s longest wars,” McDonald said in a statement to kick-off the VA’s participation.
The joint event at the Evanston Public Library will feature speakers, including Cook County Commissioner and Veteran Larry Suffredin.
Vietnam Veterans in attendance will be individually recognized with a commemorative pin. Refreshments will be provided.

To address safety and operational concerns at the intersection of Ridge Ave. and Grove St., the City of Evanston’s Public Works Agency, in coordination with the Evanston Police Department, will implement changes to the traffic patterns at the intersection on a trial basis.
The trial implementation will begin on Wednesday, April 13 and will continue until October 2016. Between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., the following traffic restrictions will be enforced:
- Northbound and southbound traffic on Ridge Ave. will be prohibited from making left turns onto Grove St.
- Eastbound and westbound traffic on Grove St. will be required to turn right onto Ridge Ave. Left turns and traveling straight through the intersection will not be allowed from Grove St.
Traffic signs will be posted.
The trial implementation will allow the City to evaluate if these modifications improve the safety and operations at this intersection before proposing permanent changes.

The City of Evanston Streets and Sanitation Division offers the FREE removal of six cubic yards of bulk garbage twice per year. All trash must be out
by 7 a.m.; City crews will not return for late set outs. If crews are unable to
complete routes on Friday, collection will continue on Saturday.
Residents with larger
debris removal needs can call 311 or 847-448-4311 to request a

New parking signage is being installed throughout Evanston to reflect the City’s updated street cleaning schedule. Parking enforcement for the 2016 season will begin on Monday, May 2 to allow for installation of the new signage. Text and email notifications will begin after signage installation is complete.
Please abide by the 2016 street cleaning map and schedule, which are available online at cityofevanston.org/streetcleaning. Residents will also receive the Public Works Agency’s "Evanston Life Spring 2016" publication in the mail, which provides the updated map and schedule.

 Evanston community members are invited to celebrate Older Americans Month with the 18th annual Aging Well Conference and Film Night on Thursday, May 5 and Friday, May 6.
Aging Well Conference The Aging Well Conference will be held on Friday, May 6, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at The Merion, located at 1611 Chicago Ave., in Evanston. The free, half-day conference includes an array of educational workshops on topics covering health, wellness, care giving, technology, financial planning, nutrition and the arts for seniors and those who care for them.
The conference will include a continental breakfast, welcoming remarks by Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl, two workshop sessions, and an intergenerational performance by the Youth & Senior Theatre Ensemble Project (YSTEP), including a short play featuring Alexis Harris and Joyce Childress, written and directed by Tim Rhoze.  Community members are invited to take a look inside the Evanston Water Treatment Facility, 555 Lincoln St., on Saturday, May 7. The City of Evanston’s Water Production Bureau will provide two tours on a first-come, first-served basis. These tours are limited to 30 people and are only open to Evanston residents.
The first tour will be given from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for adults and children 15 years or older. A second "child-friendly" tour will follow from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for residents with children age 6 years or older. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. All adults will be required to provide photo identification upon checking in.
To register, please call 847-448-8198 or email water@cityofevanston.org by Wednesday, May 4. All interested participants must provide their name, address, contact number and names of the individuals attending in their group. Registrations will not be accepted at the door.
Parking will be available in the facility's gated parking lot accessible via the driveway on the north side of Lincoln Street between the two buildings. Please arrive at the facility 20 minutes before the tour start time, as the tours will start promptly at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. and admittance to the facility will not be permitted once the tours have started.
