Celebrate Kwanzaa in Evanston December 26

Kwanzaa Celebration

Celebrate the first day of Kwanzaa at two free events on Sat., Dec. 26! Beginning at 11 a.m. in Fountain Square, “A Community Celebration of Kwanzaa” will feature music, songs, the traditional lighting of the Kinara, and the recitation of principles. At noon, learn the meaning of love, unity and the power of faith during a performance of "A Kwanzaa to Remember" at the Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center.

Evanston's seventh annual Holiday Food & Toy Drive on December 18 provided customized food and gift baskets to 400 families in need thanks to generous donations from community members. Thank you to all of those who donated, volunteered, and helped make the event a success!

City Announces Christmas Holiday Schedule

The City has announced changes in service delivery and facility schedules in recognition of the Christmas holiday. No recycling or solid waste collections will occur on Thurs., Dec. 24 or Fri., Dec. 25. All Thursday and Friday collections will occur on Sat., Dec. 26.

Evanston vs. Knoxville in Outback Bowl Wager

Mayor Tisdahl calls Mayor Rogero to make an Outback Bowl wager.

Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl and Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero placed a friendly wager on the outcome of the 30th Anniversary Outback Bowl to be played on Fri., Jan. 1 in Tampa, Florida. The game will pit the Northwestern Wildcats against the Tennessee Volunteers. See what's on the line in this “Battle of Spirits!”

Holiday string lighting and extension cords can be dropped off for recycling at the Evanston Ecology Center, Main Evanston Public Library and Levy Senior Center through Sun., Jan. 31. The program is free.

Holiday Tree Pick-ups Begin 12/28

Tree pick-up

City crews will pick up holiday trees beginning Mon., Dec. 28 through Fri., Feb. 5. Trees will be picked up on the same day of the week as residents’ normal refuse and recycling collection.

Frozen Characters Skate

Come meet the characters of "Frozen" and try ice skating on Sat., Dec. 26, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Robert Crown Center! This free program is for children ages 4 to 9 years. Classes will be divided by age group. Please dress warmly and remember mittens. Skate rental is available.
