EVANSTON POLICE  RECOVER TWO HANDGUNS IN SEPARATE INCIDENTS

On November 3, 2015 at approximately 4:52 PM, an officer on routine patrol conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 400 block of Dewey Avenue due to the driver not wearing a safety belt and failing to use a turn signal when required.  Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer detected an odor of cannabis coming from the interior of the vehicle.  A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a loaded 9mm Tanfoglio handgun underneath the front seat.  The driver was taken into custody after which time a clear plastic baggie containing approximately 3.1 grams of suspect cannabis was recovered from his person.  The driver, now identified as Marquise C. Duerr-Starling, 25 years of age and a resident of Evanston was charged with the below charges.  Duerr-Starling was also on parole at the time of the arrest and his parole status was violated by the Illinois Department of Corrections.  An arrestee photo of Duerr-Starling is included in this release for legitimate media publications only.  A photographs of the recovered firearm is also attached to this release.       .

On November 3, 2015 at approximately 11:55 PM, detectives from the tactical unit, who were working as part of the departments violence reduction initiative, were checking on an occupied vehicle that was parked in the 1900 block of Brummel Street.  Upon approaching the vehicle, the detectives noticed the odor of burnt cannabis coming from inside.  The driver of the vehicle informed the detectives that they had just finished smoking cannabis and further informed the detectives that he had a handgun in the glove compartment.  The detectives recovered a 9mm Beretta handgun from the glove compartment of the vehicle and a loaded 9mm magazine in a compartment near the steering wheel of the vehicle.  A check of the drivers Firearm Owners Identification status revealed it to be revoked.  The driver of the vehicle, Branden L. Johnson, 24 years of age and a resident of Evanston was taken into custody and charged with the below charges.  An arrestee photo of Johnson is attached to this release for legitimate media publications only.  A photograph of the recovered handgun is also attached to this release.
