Education Center/School District 65, 1500 McDaniel Ave. As a reminder, I host monthly ward meetings on the 2nd Thursday of each month. Ward meetings are your opportunity to share concerns and discuss issues that impact our ward and the greater community.

 The City has announced facility closures and refuse collection schedules for the 2015 Labor Day holiday weekend, Saturday, September 5 through Monday, September 7. No refuse collections will occur on September 7. All trash and recycling collections will occur one day later than usual next week. Thursday recycling collections and Friday condo recycling collections will occur on Friday, September 11. More >>>

I encourage all to join me at the 2015 Evanston MashUp on Wednesday, September 9, from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., on the beach directly behind Northwestern University's Henry Crown Sports Pavilion. The event is a great opportunity to mix and mingle with your fellow Evanstonians, enjoy delicious cuisine, and listen to amazing music while celebrating all our

 On Friday, September 11, at 7:30 a.m., the Evanston Fire and Police Departments will hold a 9/11 memorial ceremony to honor the brave men and women who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The City will also recognize the brave men and women of the U. S. Armed Forces who have lost their lives, as well as honor those who continue to fight the war on terror.  Please join me on Sunday, September 13, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., for Streets Alive! on Main Street, from Hinman Ave. to Robert Crown Center. This year's "open streets" event will feature the Evanston Green Living Festival and the Hispanic Heritage Month Kick-off Celebration.
 I encourage all 2nd Ward residents to join the fun while helping various organizations throughout the city as part of the United Way Evanston Day of Caring volunteer event on Saturday, September 19, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. One of the many volunteer opportunities available is a clean-up at Harbert Park, located in our 2nd Ward. Volunteers are needed to complete a variety of tasks, including light fence work, light weeding and litter control around the park. Learn more >>>

 I encourage all eligible high school juniors to apply for the Evanston Scholars program! Evanston Scholars is a non-profit organization that improves college access and success for a diverse group of ambitious Evanston students who are traditionally first-generation college entrants, low-income, and students of color, starting with the college admissions process and continuing through graduation. The comprehensive, six-year program offers workshops, mentors, ACT prep, and college counseling to support students with financial and/or academic needs. Applications are due Friday, September 25.  The City's Streets & Sanitation Division has
implemented a new process to better maintain the city’s alleyways. Each year, starting in April, the
city’s 316 gravel alleys are periodically “graded,” or smoothed out, by City of
Evanston Streets & Sanitation staff to eliminate high and low areas created
by vehicles, weather and other factors. This process improves travel,
eliminates puddles, and helps reduce flooding.
New this year, Streets &
Sanitation crews have been grading alleys according to a set schedule, similar
to the City’s process for street sweeping, rather than by 3-1-1 request. This
systematic approach was created to ensure that each alley is graded three times
per season, resulting in a more efficient and effective maintenance program and
better-maintained alleys citywide.
Results so far this season have
been reasonably successful, as all alleys have been graded at least twice. On
August 31, City crews began the last round of scheduled alley grading, which
will end in mid-October. Spot grading on highly traveled alleys will continue
on an “as needed basis” until the ground freezes.
To find out when an
alley is next scheduled to be graded, community members are encouraged to
contact the City’s 311 Service Center by calling or texting 847-448-4311. For
convenience, residents may simply dial 3-1-1 in Evanston.
