Community members will notice a splash of color around the Chicago Ave./Dempster St. area as public art displays of yarn-wrapped trees begin to pop up in the neighborhood.
As a part of the Chiaravalle Neighborly Love Community Art Project, local merchants, community members and Chiaravalle Montessori School have worked together to create colorful yarn circles in various sizes that will be stitched together and wrapped around trees throughout the area. In addition to the pop-up yarn displays, friendship bracelets and chains will be wrapped around smaller trees and the base of parking meters.

Attend a public workshop to discuss the remaining options for the Harley Clarke Mansion on Monday, May 18, 7 p.m., in the Parasol Room of the Morton Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave. The Harley Clarke Citizens’ Committee identified five options for the location, which will be empty once the Evanston Art Center moves to its new location in June 2015. Options include:
- Renovating the building for some to-be-determined use by the City
- Demolishing the building and redeveloping the site as park land
- Selling the building and allowing it to be renovated for a commercial use, such as a hotel or event space
- Selling the building and allowing the site to be redeveloped under R1 (residential) zoning
- Selling or gifting the building to an organization that would renovate and preserve it for public cultural and/or educational use
During the workshop, speakers from the community will present their case for each choice. Following the presentations, attendees will take part in a series of small group discussions to provide feedback on each option. Participants will then be asked to complete a brief survey to rank the options in order of most to least preferred. Those unable to attend the event will be able to watch a video of the presentations and provide their feedback online.
The Committee plans to make its report to the Evanston City Council on Monday, June 8.
