What should I do if I cannot file today?
The state of Illinois automatically grants a six-month extension to file your Illinois individual income tax return (Form IL-1040).
For calendar year filers, the extended due date is October 15.
If you receive a federal extension of more than six months, you will automatically receive the same extension for your Illinois return.
Note: An extension of time to file does not extend the amount of time you have to pay any tax owed.
What should I do if I owe taxes?
If you find that you owe taxes, it is essential to pay the amount due by April 15, 2026, to reduce or avoid any penalties or interest.
If you are unable to file your individual income tax return and owe taxes, pay your tax by paper check using Form IL-505-I, Automatic Extension Payment for Individuals or with any of our electronic payment options.
