IDOR Alert: Beware of New Text Message Scam Targeting Taxpayers

The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) is alerting taxpayers to a new nationwide text message scam designed to trick individuals into sharing personal and banking information.

This latest phishing scheme sends fraudulent text messages claiming that a tax refund has been processed — and urges recipients to “verify” their banking information or risk losing the refund.

How IDOR Communicates with You

IDOR does not contact taxpayers via text message, email, or social media for sensitive information.

Official communications are sent only through:

U.S. Postal Service, or
MyTax Illinois, the department’s secure online account management platform

If you receive an unexpected message claiming to be from IDOR:

Do not click any links
Do not provide personal or financial information
Delete the message immediately
