For Parents and Guardians
The K-12 Education Expense Credit gives parents and legal guardians of full-time students (under 21) a break on qualified education costs.
✅ You can claim 25% of eligible expenses over $250, up to a maximum of $750 per household. ✅ Eligible expenses include:
• Tuition
• Book rentals
• Lab fees paid to school
✅ Home-school families may also qualify for book rental and lab fees tied to an approved curriculum.
📊 Last year, nearly 200,000 Illinois families claimed this credit, saving over $64 million—with the average family receiving $324 back.
For Educators
Teachers and school staff often spend their own money to support students. The Instructional Materials and Supplies Credit helps cover those costs.
✅ Eligible educators (teachers, aides, counselors, principals) who work at least 900 hours in a full-time K-12 school can claim up to $500 in tax credits for classroom supplies. ✅ Married couples who are both educators and file jointly may claim up to $1,000.
📊 In 2024, more than 81,900 educators used this credit, saving over $35 million.
Don’t Forget
💾 Save your receipts! You’ll need them when it’s time to file your 2025 state taxes.
