Can't File Your Individual Income Tax Return by the April 18 Deadline?
Your 2022 Illinois individual income tax return is due April 18, 2023. If you will not be able to file in time, options are available to you.
What you need to know
The state of Illinois grants an automatic six-month extension to file your Illinois individual income tax return (Form IL-1040).
For calendar year filers, the extended due date is October 16.
If you receive a federal extension of more than six months, you are automatically allowed that extension for Illinois.
Note: An extension of time to file does not extend the amount of time you have to pay any tax owed.

What if I owe tax?
If you determine that you will owe tax, you must pay any tax you owe to avoid penalty and interest on or before April 18, 2023.
Use Form IL-505-I, Automatic Extension Payment for Individuals, if you are unable to file your individual income tax return and owe tax.
