Mistakes to Avoid When Filing Your Taxes
Don't let your income tax refund get caught up in delays due to avoidable mistakes.
Minimize your risk by double-checking your return for these common filing errors before submitting.
-
Calculation errors. Math errors are common. They range from simple addition and subtraction to more complex calculations. Be sure to double-check your math or, better yet, utilize MyTax Illinois or another tax prep software that calculates for you.
-
Missing or inaccurate Social Security Number (SSN). Make sure each Social Security number on your tax return appears exactly as printed on the Social Security card.
-
Misspelled names. Make sure all names listed on your tax return match each person's Social Security card.
-
Entering information inaccurately. Wages, dividends, bank interest, and other income received should be entered carefully. This includes any information needed to calculate credits and deductions. Use tax prep software to help prevent math errors, and make sure to review your tax return for accuracy.
-
Incorrect filing status. In general, you should use the same filing status as on your federal return. For special situations and additional information, please visit our website.
-
Incorrect bank account numbers. Make sure you double check your routing and account numbers on your tax return.
-
Unsigned forms. Make sure you sign your tax return. You can avoid this error by filing your return electronically and digitally signing before sending it to the Illinois Department of Revenue.
