2021 ILLINOIS TAX FILING SEASON BEGINS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12 

File electronically, request direct deposit for fastest refund

SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) will begin accepting 2020 state individual income tax returns on Friday, February 12, the same date that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) begins accepting federal individual income tax returns. 

Taxpayers who electronically file an error-free return should receive a direct deposit refund in four to six weeks, if applicable.  

IDOR top filing season tips: 

  • Create a free MyTax Illinois account. With a MyTax Illinois account, taxpayers can respond to filing inquiries from the department electronically, resulting in faster processing and issuance of owed refunds.
  • With MyTax Illinois you can:
    • Free file Form IL-1040
    • Make payments
    • Check your refund status with Where’s My Refund?
    • Respond to department inquiries
    • Look up IL-PINs
    • Find amounts of estimated tax payments made
    • Look up amounts reported on Form 1099-G
