Tomorrow (September 11): Patriot Day Ceremony at City Hall

The City of Des Plaines Fire Department is hosting a special Patriot Day Ceremony marking 25 years since the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Residents are invited to attend tomorrow (Friday, September 11) at 8 a.m. at City Hall (1420 Miner Street). The 30-minute ceremony will take place in front of the City Hall lobby and feature remarks from City officials, an audio recording from September 11, 2001, the ceremonial Ringing of the Bell, and a wreath presentation.
Students from Maine West High School will perform the National Anthem and “Amazing Grace,” while a local bagpiper will offer a salute. Members of the Police Department, elected officials, and other City staff will join the Fire Department in honoring those impacted by the attacks and remembering the lives lost.
Free parking is available in the Des Plaines Municipal Complex parking garage.

The 2026 Des Plaines Fire Department Open House is less than 10 days away!
Join Des Plaines firefighters at Station 63 (130 E. Thacker Street) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 19 for an afternoon of family fun and fire education. Residents can meet local firefighters, explore emergency vehicles, and learn more about the equipment, skills, and techniques used to help keep the community safe.
The event will feature a bounce house, several live demonstrations, touch-a-truck opportunities, and more. Kids can also hang out with Sparky the Fire Dog, the Fire Department’s mascot, and take photos with him.

Community Bike Ride & Walk Rolls Through Des Plaines on September 26
On Saturday, September 26, join members of Bike & Walk Des Plaines for the 11th annual Community Bike Ride & Walk. Registration begins at 9 a.m., with the ride and walk departing at 10 a.m.
The free event takes place along the Des Plaines River Trail, starting at Camp Ground Road Woods in the Forest Preserve Pavilion (entrance at E. Algonquin Road & Joseph Schwab Road). Participants can choose to bike or walk as they make their way along the trail.
After the ride and walk, stick around for fun activities, live music, and refreshments for the whole family to enjoy.
Helmets are required for cyclists. Advance registration is encouraged. Register on the Bike & Walk Des Plaines website.
