 Message from Mayor Goczkowski
The first month of 2026 has brought frigid temperatures and periods of snow to Des Plaines. I hope everybody is following snow removal guidelines to help keep sidewalks clear and accessible and taking precautions to stay warm and comfortable. Read below for cold weather safety tips from the Des Plaines Fire Department.
As we look ahead to warmer temperatures in the coming months, residents can start planning for the year with the 2026 Community Calendar, which has been mailed to Des Plaines households. A digital version can be found on the City’s website, with Spanish and Polish translations available online.
Another reminder: the City will soon update its utility billing website. Please continue to check e-news and the City’s official social media channels for updates and step-by-step instructions once the new system is launched.
In the meantime, please share this e-news with your family, friends, and neighbors, and encourage them to subscribe. If I can be of assistance to you, please feel free to contact me at 847-391-5301 or agoczkowski@desplainesil.gov.
Yours in service,
Andrew Goczkowski

Cold Weather Safety Reminders from the Des Plaines Fire Department
The Des Plaines Fire Department reminds residents and property owners that freezing temperatures can increase the risk of pipe and fire sprinkler freeze-ups. Taking preventive steps can help reduce damage and safety hazards:
-
Maintain indoor temperatures at 55°F or higher, even in buildings that are not in use.
-
Regularly monitor exposed areas such as attics, vestibules, and garages for signs of freezing.
-
Allow cold water to run slowly at sinks and keep cabinets containing pipes open to improve air circulation.
-
If pipes become frozen, thaw them using an electric hair dryer on a low setting. Never use an open flame.
If a pipe bursts, shut off the water supply and water heater immediately and contact a licensed plumber.
