Update: October 7 Ward Meeting Canceled
Dear Residents,
I will be out of town on Tuesday, October 7, and must cancel our regularly scheduled 8th Ward meeting. I apologize for any inconvenience and hope to see you at November’s meeting.
In the meantime, there are several exciting City events coming up. Details on the Fire Department Open House, Community Bike Ride & Walk, and the Harvest Hoot can be found below. I encourage you to attend and connect with your fellow Ward 8 neighbors.
Sincerely,
Alderman Mike Charewicz

Fire Department Open House
Public Open House at Station 63 | September 20, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s really like to be behind the wheel of a fire truck or respond to an emergency, this is your chance to find out.
Join us at the Fire Department Open House at Station 63, a free and family-friendly event where you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at some of the tools and training that go into protecting our community every day.
Explore emergency response vehicles up close, watch live demonstrations, and learn important safety tips from local firefighters. Kids can challenge themselves with an obstacle course and enjoy a variety of hands-on activities designed just for them.
Get fired up for a great day. We can’t wait to see you there!
10th Annual Community Bike Ride & Walk
On Saturday, September 27, join members of Bike & Walk Des Plaines for the 10th annual Community Bike Ride. The free event takes place on the Des Plaines River Trail, starting at Camp Ground Road Woods in the Forest Preserve Pavilion (entrance at E. Algonquin Rd. & Joseph Schwab Rd.).
This year, there’s a new option to take a leisurely walk along the river trail for those who want to enjoy the scenery on foot.
After the ride and walk, stick around for fun activities, live music, and refreshments for the whole family to enjoy.
Helmets are required. Advance registration is encouraged. You can register on the Bike & Walk Des Plaines website.
Harvest Hoot
Oakton College | October 18 from noon to 4 p.m.
Join us on October 18 from noon to 4 p.m. at Oakton College for this free outdoor event featuring an inflatable corn maze, live pumpkin carving, and up-close encounters with birds of prey at the Stillman Nature Center’s Squawk and Gawk booth. Shop more than two dozen local vendors at the artisan market and grab a bite from your favorite food trucks.
As the event continues to grow, we’re doubling the fun with two stages of live entertainment. Kids will love the family-friendly acts on the Lil’ Hoot stage, while the Hootenanny stage will feature a band sure to get everyone on their feet. Also new this year: a special appearance by Glinda the Good Witch! Don’t miss your chance to snap a photo with the most “popular” Ozian in Des Plaines.
Families can also enjoy pumpkin painting, sugar skull decorating, and other seasonal surprises. Learn more at desplainesil.gov/harvesthoot
