Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and I have much to be thankful for as Mayor. I am grateful for our hard-working and dedicated City staff, whose work makes Des Plaines a wonderful community to call home. I also sincerely appreciate our residents, who have given me the honor of a lifetime to serve as mayor in my hometown.
Des Plaines is heading in an exciting direction. Last week, we held a special meeting of the City Council to discuss the City’s downtown redevelopment plans. I was very pleased to see the council chambers full of residents, many of whom spoke up regarding their visions for the future of our downtown.
If you missed this meeting, you can watch it by clicking here. The presentation from the meeting can also be viewed by visiting this link. In addition, I encourage each of you to take a brief downtown development survey by clicking here.
Speaking of exciting developments, I was delighted to attend the ribbon cutting for Brunch City Café last week. This wonderful new family-owned restaurant is located at 901 E Oakton Street, and I encourage you to go check it out.
As we near the month of December, I want to remind you about two upcoming City-sponsored events. The first event will take place on Friday, December 6, when we will host our annual Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony at Metropolitan Square. The festivities start at 4:00 PM and feature live entertainment, food trucks, and community tables. We are also excited that Santa will make a special appearance at 4:45 PM, with the tree lighting ceremony scheduled for 6:30 PM.
On Saturday, December 7, the City will host our Winter Fair and Trolley Tours. You can explore an indoor artisan market featuring local artists and take a trolley ride for a tour of the City guided by the Des Plaines History Center. This event will take place from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Des Plaines Public Library. Trolly Tours are sold out, but there is a waitlist here.
I look forward to seeing you soon in the neighborhood or at one of our holiday events. In the meantime, if you need any assistance, please feel free to contact me directly at agoczkowski@desplainesil.gov or 847-391-5301. I also encourage you to share this E-News with your family, friends, and neighbors and invite them to subscribe.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.
Yours in service,
Andrew Goczkowski, Mayor
