Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony
Friday, Dec. 6 | 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Metropolitan Square
Join us for live entertainment and a special appearance by Santa and the Grinch. Admire the trees decorated by local community groups, and don’t forget to drop off your letter to the North Pole at our mailbox! Tree Lighting will take place at 6:30 p.m.
Featured fun and entertainment:
- Santa and the Grinch will arrive at 4:45 p.m. Be sure to snap a photo with them!
- Live performances on stage beginning at 4 p.m. featuring The Salvation Army Band, New Tradition Chorus, Artistry in Motion, Move The Beat, Big Noise Theatre, the Maine West Marching Warriors and Choraliers, and Kalapadma Dance Academy
- Name a Des Plaines snowplow contest (2023 winner: Harry Plowter)
- Community tables and hot chocolate
- Food truck offerings are available for purchase from E.J. Pierogi, Pinoy Grill, Cousins Maine Lobster, My Funnel Truck, and Ms. Tittle's Cupcakes
- Drop off your letter at Santa’s mailbox
- The mitten tree will be available for donations of new hats, gloves, mittens and scarves of all sizes. Nonperishable food donations for the Des Plaines Self Help Closet and Pantry will also be collected.
Winter Fair and Trolley Tours - New Location!
Saturday, Dec. 7 | 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Des Plaines Public Library
Shop your way through the indoor artisan market featuring local makers selling sweet treats, homemade holiday gifts, artwork, jewelry, and more. The market will be inside Library meeting rooms B and C.
Experience a historical trolley tour of the City with the Des Plaines History Center as your guide. The trolleys depart from the Des Plaines Public Library (new location!). You’ll have an additional chance to post your letter to the North Pole at our mailbox and submit an entry for the Name a Snowplow Contest!
Trolley tours are currently full, however there is a waitlist option available on our website and registration is required.

Des Plaines Youth Commission's Holiday Hoopla
Saturday, Dec. 14 | 1 to 3 p.m. at Des Plaines Public Library
The Des Plaines Youth Commission presents its annual holiday event for children, the 2024 Holiday Hoopla. Visit with Santa Claus and enjoy crafts, games, cookies, juice and holiday cheer! The event will be held at the Des Plaines Public Library in Meeting Room C. Admission is free, and the event is open to the public. Registration is not required. Children must arrive by 2:30 p.m. to visit with Santa.
Participants are encouraged to bring a non-perishable item for the Self Help Closet and Pantry.
